Über 60 Jahre nach dem Bau der Berliner Mauer am 13. August 1961 blickt das Festival "Waves of freedom" nach Hongkong und Taiwan, wo mutige Menschen in der Vergangenheit für Demokratie und Menschenrechte kämpften und auch heute angesichts chinesischer Drohgebärden in eine ungewisse Zukunft blicken.

Vom 11. bis 13. August 2023 präsentieren wir in der Stasi-Zentrale. Campus für Demokratie Dokumentar- und Spielfilme sowie einen preisgekrönten VR-Film, die die Kämpfe der Menschen in Hongkong und Taiwan für demokratische Rechte und gegen Repression, Zensur und Unfreiheit beleuchten. Eingerahmt wird das Programm auf der Bühne des "Campus-Kinos" durch Führungen durch das Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv sowie Gespräche mit den Filmschaffenden sowie Expertinnen und Experten.

Die Veranstaltungsreihe "Waves of freedom" ist eine Kooperation der taiwanesischen Kuratorin Jaye Lin und der Hongkonger Kuratorin Karen Cheung, sowie der Robert-Havemann-Gesellschaft e. V. des Bundesarchiv | Stasi-Unterlagen-Archiv.

"Waves of freedom" wird gefördert durch das Bezirksamt Lichtenberg (Amt für Weiterbildung und Kultur, Fachbereich Kunst und Kultur) und das Ministerium für Kultur Taiwans und Taipei City Funds.

With the illusion of readily available freedom, we sometimes forget that every city, including ours, has experienced a certain kind of censorship, whether in the past or present. However, longing for freedom is our human nature and the current of thoughts is like the flowing water movement in the sea. Like any other kinds of current, thoughts on freedom increase and become intense, and might decrease again, but it will also appear again.

„Freedom of Waves” presents a mix of documentary, fiction, VR films and panel discussions, highlighting the struggles of people in Hong Kong and Taiwan in different eras.

In light of the 62nd anniversary of the Berlin Wall's construction on August 13, 1961, the audience is invited to engage in the programme proactively – reflect on our stories and envision our future.

The programme is funded by Bezirksmat Lichtenberg (Amt für Weiterbildung und Kultur, Fachbereich Kunst und Kultur) and Ministry of Culture Taiwan and Taipei City Funds.
